I came into work today in a pretty good mood. I'm getting married in a couple of weeks and I just bought a house. Everything was looking good ... until I came to work today. They're laying off our whole accounting department effective September 18th ... my birthday. This is the first time I've ever been laid off. I'm still in a state of shock. They decided it would be cheaper to transition our department to Dallas, Texas. Jerks!
What do I do now? My fiance and I were dependent on my income to pay the mortgage, while his income would go towards paying off the wedding and the rest would go to additional bills we will incur. I make more money than him. I'm panicking big time.
I've always had a job and am sure I will be able to get another one. The problem is that with the recession, companies aren't willing to pay as much now. We have major bills piling up and could potentially lose everything. We just closed escrow a week ago. Why couldn't they have announced this sooner? Can I dip into my 401k? Or should I dip into my IRA? How do I go about withdrawing money from either accounts?
My fiance doesn't have any savings to dip into. My savings is currently going into our wedding and it's not like I can postpone the wedding because everything is finalized. We're getting married August 29th. We don't have time to cancel everything.
